GIMPA was established in 1961 as a special fund project between Ghana and the United Nations (UN). Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) is made up of six schools; the Business School, the Faculty of Law, the School of Technology, the School of Public Service and Governance, the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the School of Research and Graduate Studies.

GIMPA cut-off points for SSCE candidates is an aggregate of 24 or better, while for WASSCE candidates it is an aggregate of 36 or better. There are, however, specific cut-off points for each programme which will be discussed subsequently in this article.

All undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programmes under each school are stated as well as their entry requirements and cut-off points. Please note that every year, the cut-off points change slightly but most often than not, it is the same as stated in this article.

  1. SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY

GIMPA’s school of technology, formerly known as the School of Multimedia studies was established in 2003. The school was renamed the School of Technology in 2005. The vision of the school of technology is to be a world-class School with state-of-the-art equipment for training the best technology professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa. The faculty is on a mission to build quality technology professionals through innovative education.

The cut-off point for B.Sc. Information Technology at GIMPA is an aggregate of 15.

The programmes under the GIMPA school of technology are as follows;

2. FACULTY OF LAW

The Faculty of Law at GIMPA is an ideal school for the pursuit of legal scholarship and the training of would-be lawyers, legal academics and policymakers. Within the period of its existence, GIMPA Law has quickly emerged as one of the best schools for one to study law and has emerged among the many Ghanaian law schools as one of the best law schools in Ghana.

Because the school believes inpractical lawyering, GIMPA combines a tradition of advocacy and moot courts in which students are encouraged to participate in mock trials and local and international competitions. GIMPA Faculty of Law has also established itself as a leader in legal research and knowledge dissemination.

The cut-off point for the Bachelor of Law at GIMPA is an aggregate of 7.

The programmes under the GIMPA faculty of law are as follows;

The minimum qualification to be admitted to read Law at GIMPA is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an approved/recognized university with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division); OR a professional chartered qualification such as ACCA, ICA, ICSA, CIPS and CIMA; AND an interview will be conducted based on performance in the entrance exam. Only applicants who are shortlisted will be notified.

The programme is for SSCE and WASSCE candidates to read a first law degree only if they had three (3) credit passes in three core subjects and three (3) credit passes in three elective subjects.

General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates must have passes in three (3) subjects and credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.

The LL.B programme (evening stream) is the most popular of the three streams operated by GIMPA Law. The programme is designed for students with a first degree in any discipline, who wish to enroll on the LL.B programme to possibly become lawyers in the future. It is a rigorous one and prepares students for admission to professional training. This is an evening programme and therefore allows adequate time for daytime preparation.

The minimum requirements for admission is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an approved/recognized university with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division); OR a professional chartered qualification such as ACCA, ICA, ICSA, CIPS and CIMA. An entrance examination will be held and candidates who pass successfully will be shortlisted for an interview.

3. BUSINESS SCHOOL

GIMPA Business School has a long-standing reputation for providing high-quality business and management education, knowledge development and application. The vision of the GIMPA Business School is to be a centre of excellence in the development and application of business, management and entrepreneurial knowledge.

The cut-off point for GIMPA business school is aggregate 12.

4. SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SOLASS) was officially launched in December 2017. SOLASS provides dynamic, transformative and interdisciplinary educational offerings, research, and open and customised training programmes in the areas of Hospitality, Social Sciences, Languages, Communication and Liberal Arts.

To gain admission into the school SSCE candidates must have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects. WASSCE candidates must also have credit passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

The cut-off point at GIMPA for humanities/social sciences is aggregate 16/17.

5. SCHOOL OF RESEARCH AND GRADUATE STUDIES

The School of Research and Graduate Studies is the newest school at GIMPA. It became operational in 2018, with a twin focus on research and graduate studies. Its goals are to facilitate research activities by the faculty and students by providing a scholarly and conducive environment for interdisciplinary teamwork; and enable students to engage in critical analysis, grasp theoretical perspectives and demonstrate knowledge of methodologies and relevance of scholarly endeavours to practical situations.

The school’s vision is to become a leading national research Centre, recognized locally and internationally, as an effective contributor to development in Ghana, the sub-region and across the world. The school’s mission is to promote a conducive environment for research by faculty and students to impact national policy and development; teaching and learning at the graduate level; and general acquisition of knowledge.

6. SCHOOL OF PUBLIC SERVICE AND GOVERNANCE

The school was given its current name the school of public service and governance in August 2013 following the merger of the former Public Services School and the School of Governance and Leadership, to provide graduate training in Public Sector Management and Development.

The school is renowned for its exceptional teaching, challenging curriculum and remarkable graduates who are advancing leadership in Africa and around the world. Its mission is to offer practical governance and leadership programmes that prepare students for high-impact roles as public leaders and managers.

The programmes under the school of public service and governance are as follows;

To gain admission to read the Bachelor of Public Administration at GIMPA, SSCE candidates must score an aggregate of 24 and WASSCE candidates must score an aggregate of 36 or better in six subjects including core mathematics, core English, core science or social studies.

      Applicants can also apply through GIMPA’s Mature
      Programme. Mature applicants must:
      • Be at least 25 years of age at the time of application;
      • Have completed SSS/SHS or taken an equivalent
      programme;
      • Possess a proof of age (passport, baptismal card, birth
      certificate etc.) issued not less than 5 years from applica-
      tion date;
      • Complete the undergraduate application form;
      • Have taken and passed the GIMPA Mature Programme
