  1. KORLE-BU NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TRAINING COLLEGE

The Nurse’s Training College, Korle-bu was established in 1945 and is a premier institution in Ghana for nursing education. The first batch of trained Midwives took their final examination in 1930.

The two institutions, that is, Nurses’ Training College and Midwifery Training School, Korle-Bu operated as separate training institutions until they were merged in 2008.

There are 2 main Programmes at NMTC Korle-Bu: Registered General Nursing (RGN) programme and Registered Midwifery (RM) programme. The Departments under the RGN programme include Medical-Surgical Nursing, Public Health Nursing, Obstetrics Nursing, Paediatrics Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and Allied Nursing. The RM programme’s departments include Obstetric Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Neonatal Paediatric Nursing, Family Planning, Prenatal Nursing, Labour, Puerperium and Allied Midwifery.

The college’s curriculum has continued to evolve in response to the changing health needs of society including Registered General Nursing. The programme is for six semesters, leading to the Diploma in Registered General Nursing award. The programme demands a continuous assessment of students throughout the semesters. Students are assessed on their performance in class tests, mid-semester and end-of-semester examinations in both theory and clinical practice.

The registered Midwifery programme is a Diploma programme open to only female students. The RM programme is arranged semester by semester. It is also a six (6) semester course structure.

The entry requirements into Korle-bu Nursing and midwifery training college is a cutoff point of an aggregate of 36 for WASSCE students and an aggregate of 24 for SSCE students with at least a credit pass in 6 subjects (3 core and 3 electives). Students must also be between the ages of 18 and 35, pass a selection interview, be of good health and have no criminal record.

NMTC Korle-Bu is home to many students with two types of hostel accommodation. Since the College is a residential one, all students are expected to live on the campus but a few students occasionally opt to be day students. A shuttle bus service and taxis are readily available from and to the main gate of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, making the commute easy.

2. KUMASI NURSING & MIDWIFERY TRAINING COLLEGE

The Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College is a public tertiary health institution in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana founded in 1957.  

The college provides high-standard theoretical and clinical coursework in all aspects of diploma-standard general nursing and midwifery. The college now awards a direct Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery after students from the institution have completed a three-year training programme. The school is accredited by the National Accreditation Board.

The school offers three programmes: a Basic programme, a Post-basic programme, and a Certificate programme. The basic programme includes programmes such as Registered General Nurse (RGN) Diploma, Registered Midwifery (RM) Diploma which is for females only, Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) Diploma, Registered Community Health Nurse (RCHN) Diploma and more.

3. 37 MILITARY NURSING & MIDWIFERY TRAINING SCHOOL

The 37 Military Hospital Nursing and Midwifery Training College (37NMTC), a training wing of the 37 Military Hospital, was established as a department in July 1941, the same year the main hospital was built. 

Currently, the programmes offered are Registered General Nursing (RGN) and Registered Midwifery (RM). The school aims to produce an efficient, effective and disciplined polyvalent nurses. The vision of the college is to be the best Military Health Training Institution in West Africa, relying on an efficient and effective workforce, using appropriate technology to provide competent health professionals.

The school is also on a mission to promote high-quality nursing and midwifery training of soldiers and civilians, to make them competent, operational-ready and skilful healthcare service providers through technology-based learning and teaching serving on land, sea and air.

The college has excellent facilities including a library well equipped with modern books needed for teaching and learning, a sitting capacity of 40 students and equipped with computers which are connected to the internet for research purposes. It also has an ICT Laboratory with forty-five computers which are connected to the internet for students’ academic work and two well-resourced skills acquisition laboratories for RGN and RM programmes. Students are taught practical lessons at these skills laboratories and also have the opportunity to practice the skills taught.

The college has a renewable accreditation with the National Accreditation Board (NAB) to provide three-year diploma courses in Registered General Nursing and Midwifery. 4. HO NURSES TRAINING COLLEGE

The Ho Nurses’ Training College is a public tertiary health institution in Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana.

The University of Ghana awards a Diploma in Nursing after students from the institution have completed a three-year nursing training programme. The institution is accredited by the National Accreditation Board.

The school aims at inspiring students to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more in their respective journeys of life. The school has one of the best facilities and resources including a library which began operating in 1974 and has since then been supporting teaching, learning and research activities. There are currently over 4000 volumes of mono-graphic literature covering all academic programmes offered at the college and a collection of e-resources at the library.

The college offers three academic programmes: Registered General Nursing, Public Health Nursing and Post Basic BSC Nursing. The BSc. nursing programme aims at preparing graduates to be responsibly informed nurses through the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and the right professional attitudes. To gain admission to read this course, WASSCE holders must have passes (A1-C6) respectively in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

5. CAPE COAST NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TRAINING COLLEGE

Cape coast nursing and midwifery training college exists to train, through the use of modern teaching methodologies, Registered General Nurses and Midwives (Diploma) to provide good quality nursing, midwifery and neonatal care to individuals, families and the community, as a whole, within the health delivery system in the country in a humane, efficient and effective manner.

6. KOFORIDUA NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TRAINING COLLEGE

Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery Training College is a public tertiary health institution in Sekondi in the Western Region of Ghana.

The General Nursing program was started in 1954 and in 1999, the Registered General Nursing (RGN) was initiated. The Registered Midwifery (RM) was the latest programme to be introduced in 2001. The College pioneered the RM programme.

8. SUNYANI NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TRAINING COLLEGE

Sunyani Nursing and midwifery training college was established in 1972 by the Ministry of Health and became operational on 1st October 2004 after it received accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana as a Nurses Training College offering diploma programmes in General Nursing. The school is situated in Sunyani, the capital of the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The college runs three academic programmes: Registered General Nursing (RGN), Registered Midwifery (RM) and Post Nurse Assistant Clinical (Post NAC). They operate distinctively with a course structure. The Registered General Nursing (RGN) and the Registered Midwifery (RM) are for Six semesters whiles the Post Nurse Assistant Clinical (Post NAC) is for 4 semesters

9. COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, KINTAMPO, BONO EAST

The College of Health and Well-Being, Kintampo (Formerly Rural Health Training School) became fully established in 1969 by the Ministry of Health Ghana.

It has the mandate to churn out quality multi-purpose health personnel for the provision of quality health care throughout the country. The guiding principle of the school is to produce human resource capable of providing health services that is simple in operation, extensive in scope, affordable and yet efficient in quality.

 The College now runs 15 programmes made up of Direct and Post Basic Diploma Courses, BSc. Courses. These programmes range from Certificate (Auxiliary) to the Bachelors level and cover both preventive and curative health care. Some of the programmes are direct entry programmes (for WASSCE & SSSCE graduates) whilst others are Post basic Entry Programmes (for serving officers)

10. TAMALE NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TRAINING SCHOOL

The Nurses’ and Midwives’ Training College, Tamale was built and commissioned in 1974.

The college upgraded from training enrolled nurses to training Qualified Registered Nurses (QRNs), then to State Registered Nurses (SRN) and in the year 1999, commenced the training of Registered General Nurses (RGN – Diploma). In 2009, the college was among the few Nursing Training Colleges in the country to be accredited to train Registered Midwives (RM – Diploma) and in 2018, the college has the accreditation to run the Post NAC/NAP Midwifery programme.

The mission of the school is to train skilful, competent and disciplined Nurses / Midwives for the provision of quality Health care. The school’s vision is to be an institution of academic/professional excellence for the training of highly skilled, client- centred and research-oriented Nurses and Midwives for the nation and beyond.
