All universities and nursing training colleges in Ghana have cutoff points or entry requirements for nursing. There are some general entry requirements for all schools and specific entry requirements for some universities and training colleges in Ghana.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR NURSING TRAINING COLLEGES IN GHANA

The entry requirements into any nursing and midwifery training college in Ghana is a cutoff point of an aggregate of 36 for WASSCE students and an aggregate of 24 for SSCE students with at least a credit pass in 6 subjects (3 core and 3 electives). Students must also be between the ages of 18 and 35, pass a selection interview, be of good health and have no criminal record.

PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR CUTOFF POINTS FOR NURSING IN GHANA

  1. UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SCHOOL OF NURSING & MIDWIFERY

The University of Ghana offers a BSc. Nursing and their cutoff point is an aggregate of 08 for non-science and 12 for students with a science background.

The school runs an undergraduate programme leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing award. The University of Ghana School of Nursing runs a 4year degree programme in the following speciality areas: mental health nursing, paediatric nursing, midwifery, general nursing, and community health nursing. The programmes have both theory and practical components. Every academic year has two semesters with 16 weeks in each semester.  Students undertake 6 weeks of clinicals at the end of every academic year and 3weeks during each semester.

Degree Requirements
Two categories of applicants are considered for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme:

WASSCE Applicants 

In addition, to the above, applicants must have:

Diploma Holders
Two categories of diploma holders will be considered for admission:

  1. Holders of a Diploma in Nursing Education/Administration from a recognized University should have a minimum of B+ average or second-class upper.
  2. Holders of a Diploma in nursing from a recognized institution of nursing with a minimum CGPA of 3.25.

2. KNUST DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

KNUST cutoff point for BSc. Nursing is an aggregate of 08 and for BSc. Midwifery is 09.

KNUST diploma upgrade programme has been revised to a three-year BSc Programme. Certificate holders are encouraged to apply for the BSc. Programmes at the same Centres that used to run the Diploma Programmes. All BSc. Programmes for Diploma holders have a revised duration of TWO (2)-years.

Entry Requirements for BSc. Top-Up Programmes

  1. BSc Emergency Nursing

Holders of Diploma in Nursing with a good pass and have at least TWO (2) years of working experience and duly registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana or any other nursing and midwifery regulatory body. Such applicants will also be required to satisfy the University’s general requirements for admission to degree programmes for Diploma holders.

B. BSc. Nursing

Holders of Diploma in Nursing with a good pass and duly registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana or any other nursing and midwifery regulatory body. Such applicants will also be required to satisfy the University’s general requirements for admission to degree programmes for Diploma holders.

C. BSc. Midwifery

Holders of the Diploma in Midwifery with a good pass and duly registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana or any other nursing and midwifery regulatory body. Such applicants will also be required to satisfy the University’s general requirements for admission to degree programmes for Diploma holders.

3. UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

UCC School Of Nursing and Midwifery offers several undergraduate nursing programmes including BSc. Adult Health Nursing, BSc. Mental Health, BSc. Maternal & Child Health and BSc. Public Health.

UCC cutoff point for BSc. Nursing is an overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively.

BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements for admission into programmes of study for both local and international students include the following:

Applicants should have credit passes in six (6) subjects with an overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively.

Three of the six subjects should be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives.

For purposes of admission, a credit pass in:

  1. WASSCE means A1 – C6 
  2. SSSCE means A – D
  3. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level:

Applicants should, in addition to credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics), have three (3) passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.

Applicants should have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

Applicants should have credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics) and three (3) passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.

Applicants should have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level in three (3) subjects relevant to the programme of choice (minimum of grade 5 for Health and Allied Sciences). Applicants should, in addition, have a minimum of grade 4 in English/Literature and Mathematics (SL).

Applicants should have a Final Grade point of 3.0.

4. UDS SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

The cutoff point for BSc. Nursing at UDS for science students is an aggregate of 09 for males and 10 for females while the cutoff point for non-science students is 07 for males and 08 for females.

The cutoff point for BSc. Midwifery at UDS for science students is an aggregate of 09 for males and 10 for females while the cutoff point for non-science students is 07 for males and 08 for females.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. WASSCE Holders (for Degree Programmes)

WASSCE holders seeking admission into Degree programmes must have at least C6 in all their three Core and three Elective Subjects.WASSCE holders who have Grade D7 or E8 or F9 in any one of their three Core or three Elective subjects are advised not to apply for a degree programme. Candidates should therefore possess, at least, credit scores/grades in the following:

  1. Three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics (Core) and Integrated Science / Social Studies).
  2. Any three elective subjects in the relevant programmes.
  3. Aggregate Score of the best six subjects (three core and three electives) must not exceed 36. However, admissions will be on competitive basis, and various programmes offered in UDS have their cut-off points much lower than aggregate 36 for WASSCE applicants.
  4. Candidates should note that Social Studies is not an elective subject.
  5. For candidates who read Arts and Business subjects at WASSCE, a grade in Social Studies may be used in place of the grade in Integrated Science in the calculation of their aggregates if the Social Studies grade is better than the grade in Integrated Science. This is however on condition that the candidate has at least a pass in Integrated Science.
  6. For Science students, however, Social Studies (Core) does not replace Integrated Science (Core) in the calculation of candidates’ aggregates.
  7. WASSCE Holders (for Diploma Programmes)

Candidates who do not meet the requirements for Degree programmes in UDS are advised to apply for any one of the Diploma programmes (Diploma in Integrated Community Development, Diploma in Integrated Business Studies, and Diploma in Development Management, all of which are offered at the Wa Campus; Diploma in Development Education is offered in Tamale Campus; Diploma in Statistics and Diploma in Computer Science are both offered in Navrongo Campus; and Diploma in Social Change Communication is offered in Nyankpala Campus)

To be admitted into a Diploma programme, three credits passes in the area of specialization (elective subjects) and at least two passes (D7 or better) in English Language and Mathematics in WASSCE is required. Any candidate without a pass in English Language and Mathematics (core) need not apply for the Diploma. It is not likely that all candidates with the minimum requirements for Diploma programmes will be admitted. Preference will be given to candidates who have good grades/credit passes.

Candidates, who have met the requirements for Degree programmes (Credits in three electives and three core subjects), but have aggregates that are not good enough may be admitted into Diploma programmes.

  1. HND and other Diploma Holders Seeking Admission into Degree Programmes

HND and other Diploma applicants seeking admission to Degree programmes should possess at least a:

  1. Second Class Lower or better in related programmes would be admitted into Level 200;
    1. Third Class or Pass would be considered for admission to Level 100.
    1. Candidates would be required to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the University. The interviews are scheduled for Friday June 19, 2020, at the Tamale Campus.
    1. Registered Nurses

Applicants to the 3-Year BSc Nurse Practitioner programme or 2/3-Year BSc Nursing programme must be Registered Nurses with a Diploma or State Registered Nurses Certificate and at least three years of working experience. Candidates without three years of working experience are advised not to apply.For the BSc Nurse Anaesthesia programme, candidates should have one of the following: RGN (Diploma) with a minimum of 3 years post-registration working experience, RGN (BSc Nursing) with 2 years post-registration working experience and Advanced Diploma in Nurse Anaesthesia with 2 years working experience

5. UEW DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ADMINISTRATION AND EDUCATION

UEW does not offer BSc. Nursing or BSc. Midwifery but it offers several health programmes under the Department of Health Administration and Education. The cutoff point to read BSc. Health Promotion, Communication and Education, BSc Public Health and Education, or BSc. Public Health Nursing at UEW is credit passes (A1-C6) in three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and three elective subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology) at WASSCE.

UEW’s Department of Health Administration and Education is a relatively young department that has developed 10 new academic programs (3 undergraduate and 7 postgraduate), which are at various stages of accreditation.

Entry Requirements

  1. Applicants with credit passes (A1-C6) in three core subject (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and three elective subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology) at WASSCE
  2. Applicants with credit passes (A1-C6) in three core subject (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and three elective subjects (Elective Mathematics, Economics, Government, Geography, Financial Accounting, Business Management, Principles of Cost Accounting, and Management in Living) at WASSCE
  3. Applicants with a minimum of grade D in three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and three elective subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology) at SSSCE
  4. Applicants with a minimum of grade D in three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and three elective subjects (Elective Mathematics, Economics, Government, Geography, Financial Accounting, Business Management, Principles of Cost Accounting, and Management in Living)  at SSSCE
  5. Applicant with five credit passes at GCE ‘O’ level including English Language and Mathematics as well as three passes in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry Biology and
  6. Mathematics or three credit passes in (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Accounting and Finance, Economics, Business Studies, Geography and Government) in GCE ‘A’ level
  7. Applicant with a Certificate in Community Health Nursing may be admitted to level 100
  8. Applicant with a Diploma in Midwifery/ Nursing, HND in Pharmacy/Laboratory Technician and Diploma/ Advance Diploma in Physician Assistant and Health Information may be admitted to level 200.

6. UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), offers a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery and Bachelor of Public Health Nursing programme. The cutoff point for nursing at UHAS is an aggregate of 09/10 for BSc. Nursing and BSc. Midwifery but it is an aggregate of 10/12 for BSc. Public Health Nursing.

PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES THAT OFFER NURSING IN GHANA AND THEIR REQUIREMENTS

7. CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

The Nursing Programme in the Central University College will augment the number of nurses trained by the MOH and other institutions for the health sector in Ghana. It will also provide a much-needed avenue for the capacity development of graduates from the SSS. In addition, it will provide an avenue for practising nurses to enhance themselves academically (State Registered Nurses – SRNs and Diplomates).

Entry Requirements

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE): with an aggregate score of twenty-four (24) or better in six (6) subjects comprising: A – D in all three (3) core subjects i.e., English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and at least passes i.e. (A – D) in three (3) elective subjects in the options of Science, General Arts, Agricultural Science and Home Economics.

West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE): with an aggregate score of 36 or better in six (6) subjects comprising: A1 – C6 in all three (3) core subjects i.e., English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science and at least passes in three (3) elective subjects in the options of Science, General Arts, Agricultural Science and Home Economics.

Foreign Students Requirements: foreign students must have their result slips translated into English. In addition, applicants must be able to speak and write in English.

Other Entry Qualifications for Admissions: Candidates with the Diploma In Registered Nursing (RN) from recognized institutions may apply. Such candidates may transfer credits from their previous course of studies, with appropriate recommendations and references. Applicants with State Registered Nurses’ (SRN) qualification from recognized health institutions and with a minimum of 3 years of practice.

      All applicants to the School of Applied Sciences will be interviewed.

8. VALLEY VIEW UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

Valley View University School of Nursing and Midwifery is approved by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) of Ghana and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana.  The school offers a four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery.

The Nursing and Midwifery programs prepare graduates for the licensing examination administered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. All clinical experiences will be conducted off-campus at selected clinical agencies/settings. Practicum sessions are scheduled for all three shifts: Morning, Afternoon and Night shifts. No practicum is allowed between the hours of 2.00 pm on Friday and 8.00 pm on Saturday.

There is a clinical attachment fee for each nursing practicum. Transportation and accommodations will be organized by the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Three programs are offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery: BSc Nursing, BSc Midwifery and BSc Mental Health

9. ALL NATIONS UNIVERSITY NURSING DEPARTMENT

All Nations University Department of Nursing provides many opportunities for its students to gain valuable, hands-on experience that will ensure they receive a well-rounded education founded both in academic theory and real-world application.

100 LEVEL ENTERING

  1. Holders of SSSCE must obtain Grades A – D in six courses, three electives (any) and three core courses.
  2.  Holders of WASSSCE must obtain Grade A1 – C6 in six courses, three elective and three core courses.

MATURE APPLICANTS:

Applicants must be at least 25 years old at the time of the submission of the application. Two categories of mature applicants would be considered:

• State registered Nurses (SRN) will be entered at level 200*

• Registered General Nurses will be entered at level 300 after a successful interview.

• Candidates should have a minimum CGPA of 3.25 or better from an accredited institution of Nursing with a pass and in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
