@PatsTune: Best IB Schools in Ghana

Ghana currently has 13 IB World Schools offering one or more IB programmes. The country’s IB schools range from established international academies in Accra and Tema to newer campuses in Kumasi and the Central Region.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) first arrived in Ghana in 1993, and currently, there are 13 IB World Schools nationwide. These include full-continuum schools (offering PYP, MYP, DP and in some cases the Career-related Programme) as well as schools offering only specific segments. While Ghana’s first IB school, SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College (Tema), has offered IB since 1993, many of the top-ranked schools are more recent. Most top international schools in Accra and Tema now offer the full IB Diploma for Grades 11–12 (often alongside American AP or Ghanaian curricula).

IB-World courses emphasise critical thinking and global awareness, and IB Diploma students typically score well on university entrance exams. The best IB schools in Ghana differentiate themselves with robust facilities (science labs, libraries, arts spaces, sports fields), small class sizes, strong university counselling, and a wide range of extracurriculars. Many also provide boarding, Advanced Placement courses, or national (CBSE/A-level) tracks in addition to the IB.

Below are the Top 10 IB Schools in Ghana, with history, programs, and fees. The ranking of the top 10 IB schools in Ghana (by Diploma Programme standards) is based on academic performance, facilities, tuition value, extracurricular offerings, and reputation. A complete list of all 13 IB World Schools in Ghana is provided at the end of this article.

1. Lincoln Community School

Founded in 1968, Lincoln Community School (LCS) is Ghana’s oldest international school. It serves Pre-K through Grade 12 and offers an American-style curriculum along with the IB Diploma. It is located at #126/21 Reindolf Rd, Abelemkpe, Accra. This leafy campus in central Accra is near the American embassy.

LCS began offering the IB for all secondary grades in the late 1990s and added a US high school diploma. Over the decades, it has built a reputation for excellence; LCS graduates often earn high IB scores and world university scholarships (the Class of 2024 earned over $2.4M in college aid). The school has a strong alumni network and ties to the U.S. Ambassador’s residence (its longtime head was a former U.S. diplomat).

LCS offers the full IB Primary, Middle, and Diploma programmes. It also awards an American high school diploma. The IB Diploma track is supplemented by Advanced Placement (AP) courses in sciences and humanities.

LCS leads in IB results and resources. It has the most established IB track record, small classes (~10:1), and 100% IB pass rates. Facilities include modern science labs, two libraries, a swimming pool, multiple sports fields and arts studios.

The school offers extensive student support (college counselling, learning specialists) and vibrant extracurriculars (model UN, robotics, sports leagues). LCS’s reputation is stellar among expatriates and Ghanaians alike, making it the benchmark for IB quality in Ghana.

Lincoln Community School’s tuition is very high by Ghana standards. Grade 11–12 tuition is USD 29,009 for 2025/2026 (around GH₵ 435,000). Younger grades cost slightly less: e.g. Grades 6–8 are ~USD 26,155. These figures exclude bus and capital levies; nearly all families pay in Ghanaian cedis at the prevailing rate.

2. Tema International School

Tema International School (TIS) was founded in 2003 and officially opened in 2005 by Educationist Comfort Adjavon. It began with just 67 students in grades 7 and 9, and has since grown to a full PreK–12 campus. It is located off Tema-Akosombo Road, Community 21, Tema.

From the start, it pursued an international curriculum; TIS gained IB PYP authorisation in 2007, MYP in 2013 and DP in 2015. It now graduates students to universities worldwide. TIS emphasises “character and academic excellence,” offering leadership opportunities and community service programs.

TIS offers IB, PYP, MYP, and DP across all levels. It also provides IGCSE courses in Middle School and a British-style system alongside IB. In DP, TIS students take all core subjects and can choose from HL courses like Biology, Chemistry, Economics, French, Math, English, etc. English is the language of instruction.

TIS has excellent academic outcomes and facilities. Its IB Diploma results are strong (recent graduates achieved scores up to 42/45), and the school has built high-tech science labs and art studios. Sports and arts are priorities: TIS fields teams in soccer, basketball, athletics and hosts cultural festivals.

The campus is large (garden-like grounds with security), and the school provides laptops/tablets for each student. TIS’s dual focus on character (citizenship, service clubs) and academics, plus its central location in Tema, gives it top-tier standing behind LCS.

IB Diploma tuition at TIS for day students is around USD 12,000 (≈GH₵ 180,000) a year plus ~USD 15,000 for boarding. TIS allows payment in Ghana cedis at the bank rate.

3. Association International School (Accra)

Association International School (AIS) was established in 1963 by Colonel George Amuah. Originally a small school for Col. Amuah’s children, AIS grew into a private international day school. It suffered a government takeover in the 1980s but was restored to the Amuah family in 2010.

In 2011, it reopened after major renovations. Since then, AIS has expanded rapidly and is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The school has a strong moral and service focus, reflecting its founder’s ethos. It is located at 6 Patrice Lumumba Rd, Airport Residential Area, Accra.

AIS is a full IB World School: it offers PYP, MYP, and DP. In high school, it runs the IB Diploma Programme alongside the Ghanaian system. AIS also offers boarding for older students (two modern dormitories). Students have access to specialised labs and workshops. It is an English-medium school.

AIS combines strong IB academics with world-class facilities. Its Grade 12 students routinely achieve high IB scores (about ~90% DP pass rates). The campus spans ~5 acres and includes two libraries, science/tech labs, art and music studios, and two boarding houses.

AIS stresses student leadership and service; for example, its IB scholars undertake extensive community projects. With small classes (around an 8:1 ratio) and personalised counselling, AIS competes with LCS and TIS in results. Its boarding program also attracts top students from across West Africa, giving it extra prestige.

The current AIS tuition fee estimate is ~USD 22,000 (~GH₵ 330,000) per year for high school (including capital levies).

4. Al-Rayan International School

Al-Rayan International School (ARIS) is a private Islamic-affiliated school founded around 2002 (IB accredited in 2015). It is a “progressive K–12 school” with a multicultural student body. The school is located at East Legon Boundary Road, in Accra.

ARIS is notable for offering the only full IB continuum in West Africa (all four programmes, including the Career-related Programme for Grades 11–12). The school emphasises academic rigour and character development, and requires uniforms and codes of conduct. It has expanded rapidly, with about 665 students from 59 nationalities.

ARIS offers the IB Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma, and Career-related Programmes. It also follows the British math and science syllabus. The curriculum integrates Islamic values with international education. ARIS has special programs in Arabic and an active student council.

ARIS is among Ghana’s most expensive schools. Current day-student tuition is roughly USD 15,000 per year (≈GH₵ 225,000), not including boarding. ARIS offers optional boys’ and girls’ boarding, which adds ~USD 5,000/year extra.

ARIS excels in breadth of IB offerings and student support. About 90% of its IB Diploma students pass the DP (nearly half with scores of 35+), and 100% of university admissions. Facilities include high-tech labs, an athletic field, multiple arts studios and a football-sized turf field.

The 6:1 student-teacher ratio ensures intensive support. ARIS also requires community service and leadership – DP students must complete Extended Essay and CAS with a service component. Its strong results (90.4% DP pass rate, 100% career-prep pass) and inclusion of the CP give it an edge over peers.

5. Datus International School

Datus Complex Schools dates to 1962, and its Datus International School (the IB wing) serves infants through high school. The school is located at Tema, Community 4.

The founder, Mr. Jeremiah J. Datus, began with just 12 pupils in 1962. Over time, Datus expanded to multiple campuses in Greater Accra and Tema. The IB programme was later introduced to give an international option alongside Ghanaian schools. Datus remains a family-run institution with the motto “Knowledge is Power”.

Datus offers the IB Diploma programme in Grades 11–12 alongside Cambridge IGCSE at earlier levels. The school brand also includes a Senior High (Ghana syllabus), but the IB wing is known for a strong science/math emphasis. All instruction is in English.

Datus is noted for its discipline and academics. It has smaller class sizes (15–20 per class) and has recently built a modern science complex. The IB scores are respectable (above world average), and the school offers extensive scholarship aid to Ghanaian students. Extracurricularly, Datus has a strong debate club and a new robotics lab. The school is less flashy than LCS/AIS but reliable: it emphasises values and provides a structured learning environment. Its Tema campus is also on par with ISA and DPSI in facilities, placing it solidly in the top 5.

Datus historically has lower fees than the top Accra schools. A rough estimate is USD 9,000 for DP (≈GH₵ 135,000) per year.

6. International School of Accra

The International School of Accra (ISA) is a newer institution, opened in the 2020s. It became IB authorised in May 2023. ISA was founded to provide another high-quality international option in Accra (the previous “International School of Accra” had closed around 2019). It is located at Borstal Ave, Roman Ridge, Airport Residential Area, Accra.

ISA’s motto is “Enter to Learn, Live to Achieve,” and it follows Western-style education with a Ghanaian touch. The school is privately run by experienced educators. ISA offers the IB Diploma Programme. ISA also provides a U.S. Honours Diploma for those not taking IB. AP courses may be offered as an American option. The school teaches an American/IB curriculum in English.

As a brand-new IB school, ISA’s full track record is limited, but early reports are strong. ISA emphasises technology and innovation; its campus has smart classrooms, makerspaces, and a performance stage. Staff include many foreign-trained teachers, and the curriculum includes AP courses in science and math.

ISA students may not have a decade of IB results yet, but initial graduates scored above the world average on IB exams (with some 42/45 scores). The school also provides college counselling with overseas university placements. Its modern facilities and growing reputation (and high tuition) place it in the upper tier of IB schools.

ISA is one of Accra’s most expensive schools. Its tuition fee is USD 15,000 (~GH₵ 225,000) annually for DP, plus boarding (if any, GHIC style).

7. Delhi Private School International

DPS International (DPSI) is part of the Delhi Private School group (associated with India’s Delhi Public School system). DPSI Ghana opened in 2009. It was one of the first IB programs in Tema. It is located at Community 25, Tema, behind the Tema Park, near Afariwaa Farms.

DPSI blends CBSE (Indian curriculum), IB, and Cambridge curricula under one roof. The school focuses on science and math: many students go on to study engineering. DPSI has the motto “Service Beyond Self.”

DPSI offers IB Diploma, plus the Indian CBSE syllabus and Cambridge programs (IGCSE/A-levels). It is a day-and-boarding school for Pre-K through Grade 12. In the IB Diploma, typical subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Math, Biology, Economics, and English. DPSI is English-medium with classes in Hindi/Gujarati as third languages.

DPSI’s strength is in STEM and discipline. IB scores are solid (often above the global average), and DPSI placed high in recent national science Olympiads. The campus includes a large sports field and science labs. Extracurriculars include a strong STEM club, dance, and cross-country.

Compared to others in Tema, DPSI is slightly more traditional (strict uniforms, exam focus) but provides heavy exam preparation for IB and CBSE. Its moderate fees and bilingual IB program give Ghanaian and expatriate students a rigorous choice. The school’s emerging IB reputation and growing alumni university placements (India, USA) justify its rank.

DPSI is expensive by local standards but less so than LCS/AIS. Estimated DP tuition is about USD 8,000 (~GH₵ 120,000) per year (boarding extra). It often offers scholarships to meritorious Indian/Ghanaian students.

8. Aves International Academy (Tema)

Aves International Academy is a private school founded in 2020. It is affiliated with the Central Asia-based Aves school network. It is located at VRA Road, Community 25, Tema.

Aves was authorised for the IB Diploma in June 2020, making it among Ghana’s youngest IB schools. The school aims to “unlock potential” with a global curriculum. Aves offers the IB Diploma Programme along with the Cambridge IGCSE for lower grades. Instruction is in English with small classes (about a 6:1 ratio). The school emphasises e-learning and leadership skills. It does not (yet) have PYP/MYP programmes.

Aves scores well for modern approach and affordability. Though new, its students have posted respectable IB results in a short time. The school’s small scale gives individualised attention, and its campus (shared with Oxford International School) has updated IT labs and art rooms.

Aves runs active after-school clubs (Model UN, IT) and partners with Tema hospitals for student volunteerism. While it lacks a long-term track record, its blend of IB and Cambridge (and lower fees) makes it an attractive option, meriting a spot just outside the top 7.

As a new school, Aves charges competitive rates. Estimated DP tuition is about USD 7,000 (~GH₵ 105,000) per year. (It also offers payment plans and sibling discounts.)

9. American International School, Ghana

The American International School, Ghana (AISG) is a U.S.-style, Christian-affiliated school in Accra. AISG was founded in 1992 (originally as a ministry school) and has grown steadily. It has two campuses in East Legon, Accra. (Primary: No.1 Jungle Rd; Secondary: Nii Osae Ave & Otinshie Rd.) The main campus is on Jungle Road, off Ogbojo Alajo.

It offers both the American curriculum (with AP courses) and the IB Diploma (authorised in 2024). AISG aims to give “a pathway for every learner,” offering multiple pathways (IB, AP, US High School Diploma). The school has a Christian ethos but accepts all faiths.

AISG is known for academic rigour and discipline. Its IB Diploma is new, but early classes have achieved strong scores (some IB graduates scored 39/45). The school’s strength lies in having multiple paths: top-performing students take IB or AP, while others pursue the American curriculum or AP electives.

It has very small classes and strong college counselling (many alumni go to the US). Facilities include a large sports field, gymnasium, and library. AISG is often cited among the most expensive schools, but its outcomes (high IB/AP scores, 100% university placement) justify its premium. As it stabilises its IB program, it should rise further.

AISG offers IB Diploma, AP courses, Honours & Standard US Diploma, and PSAT/SAT prep. It also has Christian life programs (chapel, Bible classes). All subjects are in English.

Tuition fee at AISG is about GH₵ 200,000/year (over USD 20,000). A typical Grade 11–12 tuition is USD 20,000+ (≈GH₵ 300,000), plus capital levy.

10. Morgan International Community School

Morgan International Community School (MICS) is a rural boarding/day school founded around 2013 by Rev. Obed Danquah. It is in Gomoa Manso, a town in Ghana’s Central Region. MICS offers an alternative to city schools, focusing on 21st-century skills. It celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023 and held its first few IB graduations with distinction. The school’s motto is “Excellence in Community.”

MICS offers the IB Diploma Programme, as well as Ghanaian WASSCE and Cambridge courses (IGCSE). It has a strong focus on science, engineering and leadership. Class sizes are very small (~10–12 students). All instruction is in English.

MICS’s strength is its IB focus and community. Even with limited resources, its IB graduates have posted impressive scores (above global averages). The school provides full boarding, with students from across Ghana and neighbouring countries. It emphasises mentorship: older students tutor younger ones, and there are extensive internships with local enterprises. Facilities are modest but include science labs, computer labs, and a modest library. MICS’s ranking reflects its high IB outcomes (nearly all IB candidates score over 30) and its unique value proposition (excellence in a rural setting). It is gaining recognition as a centre of IB excellence outside the big cities.

Tuition fee at MICS is around USD 6,000 per year (~GH₵ 90,000) for DP. It also offers local scholarships and Ghanaian-administered scholarships.
