History
Mfantsipim traces its origins to the Wesleyan High School, which opened on April 3, 1876, under the auspices of the Methodist Church in the then Gold Coast. The initial purpose was to train teachers and instil Christian values, and the first cohort numbered just 17 students under the leadership of 18-year-old Headmaster James Picot.
In 1896, the institution briefly adopted the name Wesleyan Collegiate School before John Mensah-Sarbah, a prominent alumnus, founded a rival establishment called Mfantsipim in 1905. That same year, the two schools merged under Methodist supervision and permanently took on the name Mfantsipim, meaning “gathering of hosts of scholars for change” in Fante. Over time, the school expanded its curriculum beyond teacher training to encompass a full secondary experience, laying the groundwork for its modern status as a leader in Ghana’s second-cycle education system.

Sports facilities include a main athletic field used for football and track events, multiple basketball courts (underpinning the school’s success in Sprite basketball championships), a volleyball court, and an on-campus swimming pool. In sports, Mfantsipim’s basketball team has claimed multiple Sprite Basketball National Championships (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014), and the school fields competitive teams in football, athletics, tennis, and swimming.

School Uniform
The official Mfantsipim uniform consists of a crimson and black striped shirt paired with black shorts. The shirt bears the school logo—a red shield with four symbols and the motto “Dwen Hwɛ Kan” (“Think and Look Ahead”)—embroidered above the breast pocket.
On formal occasions, such as Speech and Prize Giving Day, students add a black tie featuring the school crest. Sports or physical education days require a separate sports kit provided by the school. Adherence to uniform regulations—neat haircuts, polished black shoes, and proper bearing—is strictly enforced to instil discipline and pride of identity.

Courses Offered
Mfantsipim follows the Ghana Education Service curriculum, leading to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Students select from four main program tracks: General Arts, General Science, Business, and Visual Arts.
The General Science track includes courses such as Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Agricultural Science. General Arts students choose from Literature in English, History, Economics, Government, and Geography.
Business track participants study Accounting, Economics, Business Management, and Elective Mathematics, while Visual Arts students focus on Graphic Design, Sculpture, and Ceramics alongside core subjects.
